An Indiana teacher and newly-minted birdwatcher named Jeremy Ross was gazing through his spotting scope last week when he noticed something a little odd.

“I got the binoculars out and watched it land,” Ross said, recounting the story for Indy Star writer Ryan Sabalow. “It was real pretty. But with the black and white and orange, I thought, ‘That’s just not normal.’”

(Boy, if I had a nickel for every time I heard someone describe Rare Bird that way… But I digress.)

What Ross saw, in fact, was completely normal. But certainly not normal for Indiana. He was eyeing a beautiful Black-Tailed Godwit, a gull-sized shorebird native to Europe and Asia. You can read the rest of the details at the Indianapolis Star.

I have to say, I really love the name  ‘black-tailed godwit’. It reminds me of the Rare Bird Horoscopes we write and deliver to folks on their birthdays. The bird for the current zodiac symbol (March 21 – April 19) is the Northern Shrike. If your birthday falls in this sign, click here to learn what’s in store for you.
